The units of length, mass and time are called the fundamental units. These are so named because they cannot be derived from one another. Moreover, they cannot be resolved into anything more fundamental.

For example, we select meter as the unit of length, then the unit of area is square meter which is a derived unit. The unit of velocity is also a derived unit which contains the units of length and time.
